Juniors and seniors from Mr. Blake Perkins' Psychology class at MCHS were asked to create a children's book that focused on primary age students and their abilities to handle emotions and social settings. As a class, they felt social and emotional learning was a vital part of a child's development and, therefore, focused their books on teaching important skills to handle emotions and social situations at school. Some of those high school students visited Longest Elementary and Bremen Elementary today to read those books to second graders. The Board of Education recognized 17 outstanding teachers who achieved a rank change through the completion of the GRREC ED Rank Change Program at the October board meeting. The rank change program began in January 2021. Each of these teachers selected a content focus area for their 2-year professional growth journey and engaged in deep professional learning and action research in their current role. They presented a Capstone project that included a Problem of Practice, research, implementation, and impact data to earn their rank change. Congratulations to each of these teachers!

The Muhlenberg County High School Agriculture Department offered a Wildlife Resources class aimed at providing hunter education certification, which is legally required for hunting in Kentucky and other states. IHEA Hunter Education Instructors, Kentucky State Police, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, and shooting sports coaches covered a range of topics, including equipment knowledge, shooting skills, hunting techniques, safety, ethics, and wildlife conservation to ensure students complete firearm range certification.

All Muhlenberg County Schools will be closed October 9-13 for Fall Break.

Native of Muhlenberg County, Colonel Curtis W. King, visited Muhlenberg County High School on September 29, 2023 to speak to students about leadership, good citizenship, and pursuing life dreams and professional goals. Colonel Curtis W. King is the 45th Commandant of the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School, Chief of Air Defense Artillery, and Deputy Commanding General of the Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill, Oklahoma. COL King has been nominated by the President for the rank of General and will soon be promoted. Following his information briefing with students, COL King received a capability briefing from the JROTC Mustang Battalion Command Team and Primary Staff. Upon completion of the capability brief, COL King participated in a High Intensity Workout (HIT) with cadets that consisted of a 50-yard slalom with an 80-pound sled drag, a 10-pound medicine ball over head throws with core truck throws for 50 yards and a Log Physical Fitness that consisted of overhead presses, curl ups, standing crunch and three 50-yard sprints. COL Curtis King graduated from Muhlenberg North High School in 1992 and graduated from the United States Military Academy in West Point with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in 1996. He also holds a Master of Science in Strategic Military Studies from the United States War College. COL King is married to the former Kimberly Wilcox, and they have three children.

Longest Elementary hosted a Celebration of Learning yesterday afternoon for all students and their families. Students shared in their classrooms all the wonderful things they have been learning over the past nine weeks. It's October and our Judge Executive Mack McGehee has signed a proclamation inviting all citizens to duly note that it is "Muhlenberg Goes to College Month." Through the assistance of Muhlenberg Achieves, our high school seniors will be encouraged to submit at least one application to a college or institution of higher learning this month. From bouncy houses and painted faces to pumpkin decorating contests and color-sprayed hair, three of our elementary schools are hosting fall festivals today. Bremen Elementary, Greenville Elementary, and Muhlenberg South Elementary have lots of smiling faces as our students enjoy having fun! Thank you to all of our staff, families, and volunteers who have helped to make this an exciting day. The community is invited to attend any of these this evening.

Students across the district participated in the national "See You at the Pole" day this morning before school. Several students at Longest Elementary met and Deputy Kerry Vincent shared a few thoughts.

All 3rd graders at Longest Elementary just finished reading "The Lemonade War" novel by Jacqueline Davies. As a Project Based Learning activity, students created business plans on how to set up a lemonade stand. From calculating prices and collecting donations to advertising and creating work shifts to sell the lemonade, students collaborated together and competed by class for the most money raised. Each class sold lemonade during recess and will be donating the proceeds to the Humane Society. Another great example of our Profile of a Learner work in action. Way to go, students! Thank you to all who contributed to this activity.

Muhlenberg County High School senior, Paxton Evitts, signed his letter of intent with Indiana University Southeast to continue his tennis career next fall. Coach Clif Winchell attended the signing and is looking forward to working with Evitts at the college level. Congratulations, Paxton Evitts!

Throughout this work day, various groups of employees are meeting to collaborate together across the school district. All special education teachers, counselors, and related service providers are receiving special education update training from WKEC staff at Martin Hall.

New teacher training was held yesterday afternoon at the Board of Education. These teachers meet once a month to discuss and learn all about being the best versions of themselves as teachers in the Muhlenberg County School District.

Over the past two days, administrators and teachers across the district have worked with Katie Martin from Learner-Center Collaborative to build instructional coaching capacity around the work of the Profile of a Learner. Staff took a deeper dive into the five competencies represented in the Profile and look forward to sharing this work within their buildings.

Bremen Elementary's 5th grade class performed at a Patriot Day Assembly yesterday where they honored first responders. The performance highlighted the horrific events that took place on September 11, 2001. At the close of the assembly, students paraded in front of the school to thank our local first responders by giving them thank you cards, artwork, and lots of high fives and fist bumps. Thank you to all who attended. We will never forget...
