• Did you know that over 260 Muhlenberg County youth depend upon their weekend
foods being provided by our Food for Kids Backpack Program?
• Did you know that children who are suffering from food insecurity do not perform well
academically, display unacceptable behavior and have poor attendance in school due to
illness or reasons unexcused?
• Did you realize that the funds to purchase the foods for the program must be raised
locally?
• Foods to supply a weekly backpack for 1 student for the school year costs $120, and
that’s buying the food from “Feeding America” at a greatly reduced price.
• If you do the math you see that we must raise $32,000.00 to support this program for
the next school year.
• Our 4-H Teen Club initiated the Food for Kids Backpack Program over 14 years ago, we
deliver the backpacks to school on a weekly basis, and spearhead an annual fundraising
effort, which as you can imagine is a monumental task.
• Our 4-H Teen Club will be hosting an exciting winter event to raise funds for the
program, which we hope you will support.
• On February 17, 2024, we’ll be conducting our annual Penguin Plunge! This event
hopefully will motivate individuals, clubs, organizations, businesses, church groups,
whomever to participate in the fundraising effort. Come up with a theme. Dress up. Have
fun with it. Anyone raising $120, enough to sponsor one child, is invited to take the
“plunge” into the icy waters. This is great incentive, and great fun. OF COURSE one
doesn’t have to take the plunge to participate. Maybe you could challenge your group
to raise so many dollars to “NOT take the plunge.”
• Of course financial contributions are welcome at any time and can be mailed to or
dropped off at the UK Extension Office (3690 State Route 1380 Central City, KY 42330)
with checks being made to the Muhlenberg 4-H Backpack Program.
