Madisonville, KY – April 15, 2025 — Madisonville Community College and Murray State University-Madisonville are proud to announce the nomination of three outstanding local educators for the prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award, honoring their dedication, innovation, and impact in the classroom. This year’s nominees include Skylar McCarraher at the elementary level, Kecia Blake at the middle school level, and Paula Rager at the high school level.

These educators have gone above and beyond in their commitment to student success and have made lasting impressions on their school communities.

Skylar McCarraher, an elementary teacher known for her boundless enthusiasm and love for her students, has been praised for creating a vibrant, engaging classroom environment. “Skylar LOVES her students first and foremost,” said one nominator. “She makes learning super fun. Her positive disposition is infectious, and she works hard to ensure her students succeed and grow.”

Kecia Blake, representing the middle school level, stands out for her creative approach to teaching and her deep connection with students. “Mrs. Blake is an exceptional teacher,” shared a colleague. “She connects with her students on a personal level and truly cares for their well-being. A true passion for teaching is a special gift, and Mrs. Blake shows this passion on many levels.”

Paula Rager, a high school English teacher at Muhlenberg County High School, has made significant strides in literacy education. Her nominators highlighted her leadership in implementing reading interventions and her dedication to collaboration. “She has been a critical part of developing an intervention system for students who do not read on grade level,” noted one supporter. “Paula is a passionate educator who does so much more than teach—she inspires.”

The Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes educators across Western Kentucky who exemplify excellence in teaching practices, student engagement, and leadership in education.

Winners will be formally recognized at an upcoming ceremony hosted by the college.
